Sound Sessions with Tuning Forks

Introduction

Sound healing was used in ancient cultures as they recognized the impact of sound on one’s spirit, mind and body. The discovery of using musical intervals, or sound, for healing has been credited to the Greek philosopher and mathematician Pythagoras (569-475 B.C.E). He was the first to explore the relationship between music (sound) and numbers. He is known to have recommended listening to the tones of the Perfect Fifth to calm angered feelings. Lao Tzu, author of the Tao Te Ching named the Perfect Fifth tone the “Universal Harmony” or the energy between Yin and Yang. This interval is known to decrease stress and to rebalance our bodies, allowing for relaxation. India’s ancient healing system of Ayurveda, considered sound therapy as an important component of healing and well-being. North American Shamans have used drums, rattles, flutes and other instruments in their healing practices for thousands of years.

In the 20th century, as interest in holistic and alternative therapies grew, pioneers like Swiss scientist and philosopher Hans Jenny and American ENT and sound researcher Dr. Alfred Tomatis studied the effects of sound vibrations on human physiology and psychology. They provided the foundation for current practitioners to further develop and fine-tune sound healing techniques. Fabien Maman, musician, acupuncturist, and sound researcher, and John Beaulieu, musician, psychotherapist, and sound researcher use tuning forks to promote healing.

Please understand that the practitioner does not do the healing, the vibration of sound does. When a particular sound frequency resonates with the cell frequency, it becomes entrained and the cell reverts to it’s original vibration.

What to Expect

You may lay either face up or face down on a massage table or you may choose to sit in a chair, fully clothed. Please wear light weight clothing for best results.

The unweighted tuning forks will be struck and placed near your ears and or around your body.

The weighted tuning fork is struck to create a vibration and then the end of the stem is placed on relaxation points or areas of discomfort. Much like acupuncture, it helps to release tension and move stagnant energy by calming your nervous system. It may also decrease physical pain by triggering your cells to produce nitric oxide, which is necessary for healing.
